At Rural Water Access Foundation (RUWAF), we believe that access to clean, safe, and sustainable water is a fundamental right. Our intervention in Solar-Powered Borehole Construction and Rehabilitation is designed to address water scarcity in rural communities by leveraging renewable energy for long-term impact.

Needs Assessment and Community Engagement

We begin by conducting a thorough needs assessment in partnership with local leaders, community-based organizations, and households. This includes analyzing existing water sources, access gaps, population data, and environmental factors. We prioritize communities based on water stress levels, vulnerability, and health indicators.
RUWAF holds community sensitization and engagement meetings to ensure local ownership, understanding of the project goals, and participation throughout the process.

Site Selection and Technical Feasibility Studies

Our technical team, in collaboration with geophysical survey experts, conducts hydrogeological assessments to identify suitable drilling points. We ensure compliance with national standards for water infrastructure development and select sites based on depth, yield potential, and accessibility.

Design and Procurement

Once the site is approved, we design the borehole system with components such as:
- Solar panels
- Submersible pumps
- Elevated storage tanks
- Distribution points (standpipes or tap stations)
We procure high-quality, durable equipment and materials from certified vendors to guarantee long-term functionality.

Borehole Drilling and Construction

Our certified drilling partners handle the drilling process, casing installation, gravel packing, and borehole development. The solar pumping system and storage tanks are installed based on the design. Quality control measures, including water quality testing, are conducted before commissioning.

Community Training and WASH Sensitization

We train Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Committees (WASHCOMs) on system management, maintenance, and reporting. Communities also receive hygiene education to maximize the health benefits of improved water access.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Rehabilitation

We conduct regular post-construction monitoring to ensure performance, address faults, and track usage. In cases of existing non-functional boreholes, we carry out thorough diagnostics and rehabilitate them with solar-powered systems for improved reliability.
